1985 318 random stalls ???

I have a 1985 318i when driving down the road the car seems to have three problems only one being serious. That is the random stoping of the engine. When the ignition is turned off and then restarted the car functions fine. as for the duration of the trip is random any where from 2 min to over an hour before it happens. the other items that I have noticed but may be unrelated are a random movement of the MPG gauge and a flickering of the brake warning lite (new brakes and checked system all OK)
Any ideas
