Which Transmission more reliable?

Hello guys

I'm new to the Firebird/Trans Am fourms, so, Hi.

I am going to be looking to get a 98+ Trans Am WS6 hopefully within a year, but I am trying to gather all the info I can before i even start to really look.

My major debate now is whether i should look for cars with a 6-speed, or to get the automatic transmission.

I know that all automatic transmissions can easilly have problems, and I have read about some of the problems with the Manual transmissions on these cars as well, so, I am bascially asking is, which transmission, overall, tend to be more reliable. I know thats sorta a hard question to answer, but, if anything can give me an idea.

As far as modding the car, I would love to do some, such as intake, headers/exhaust, nothing too, too insane.

Thanks a lot!

-Chris

Re: Which Transmission more reliable?

as long as the guy before em took okay care of them, and routine maintanance, they should be pretty good.. just make sure they werent beaten. if you're a quarter-miler then you should get the auto but if you like driving stick, go for it.. both are pretty much the same reliability..although ive had bad experiences with a auto (but it wasnt electronic controlled...)

Re: Which Transmission more reliable?

Theres not too much difference performance wise with the A4 or the M6 like the mustangs. Just go for your personal preference. Like ikey said if your a 1/4 mile whore go for the A4..its the reason i did

Re: Which Transmission more reliable?

6 speed standard > 4 speed automatic for performance.

6 speed standard < 4 speed automatic for reliability.

This is considering they are properly taken care of and not constantly abused.

Funny, I would say the complete opposite, 1/4 - Lite to lite performance anyway.

Re: Which Transmission more reliable?

They will both be just about as reliable as the other. If you beat on either they will eventually fail. If you take it easy on either they will last a very long time.

Drag racing: Stalled auto > 6sp with a really good driver > auto > 6sp with an average driver

Road course/autocross: any 6sp > any auto
