I removed the bolt that holds the belt pully. But how do I remove the lower pully that is attached to the engine? The spot welds let go and the pully split in two.

use 2 screw drivers and and pry it off its not that hard just keep at it

Thank you for the advice. but I ended up removing it wlth a slide hammer gear puller. where I had to rotate the pully half turns in order to pull it off evenly with a slide hammer.

Sometimes you just have to use what's laying around in the garage. Old VW's should never die.
