Oil Pressure Light

Well, I decided to keep my car, and get the issue with the head gasket fixed. Now here is my question...... I took my car to jiffy Lube about 2 weeks ago, and I asked them if the oil was watery or milky, they said that it was ok, there is noting found in the old oil. So im still clueless on how anit-freeze is geting to the spark plug(s).
Now, today while sitting at a red light, the oil light came on. Not the normal change oil light, but the "red" oil light. And it stayed on the whole time while I was sitting at the red light. Then when I get going, the light goes off, so it only comes on when im sitting idle. Now the last thing I did before this happend was add a can of Restore Oil treatment (the stuff that comes in the metal can.) I normally do this after I get a oil change, so I don't think this would have caused it. Any ideas on what it could be, and what I can do to fix it myself. At this point, im willing to try just about anything...HELP ME!!! Oh yeah, the oil light flickers like it doesnt know if it wants to stay on or not... hope that helps.....

Re: Oil Pressure Light

Sounds like the sending unit, tends to do that at idle when its time to change it (ASSUMING THERE ISN'T A REAL OIL PRESSURE PROBLEM)

How would i know if I had a oil pressure problem? Would I be hearing some kind of noise? Also, does this car also have a PCV valve? If so, would that give a false reading also?

Re: Oil Pressure Light

Install a mechanical gauge in place of the sending unit for the light, see what the oil pressure is when the engine is at normal temp and at idle. Cold oil will give higher pressure, once it warms up it thins out a bit. It could be several things, bad sensor, worn oil pump, worn bearings, crud built up inside the motor, defective oil filter, wrong oil, I could keep going for a while on this one. Check the pressure first, let us know what the gauge reads.

Re: Oil Pressure Light

Should be on the top of the motor, left side standing in front of the car, behind the power steering pump. It's angled so you can get it out with a socket and not have to remove the power steering pump. Should have 2 wires (I think) coming off it.

Guess what? I just changed the oil myself, and theres no low oil pressure light!!! Now I got another problem, the SES light came on, and the car started acting funny... It wouldn't get speed, the tranny hit really hard when its going into another gear, and also, the trac off light wouldnt shut off. So I scanned the coded, and i got 0122. I lost the book, so I cant find out what it means. And ideas what the code means, and how to fix it?

Re: Oil Pressure Light

well that code says ,
Throttle position sensor circuit with low input.
Thiers also a high input, PO123 .

Testing the Throttle position sensor(TPS).
its the same procedure for both the 4cyl and V6.

Its located on the side of the TB.
The right side on your 2.4L(as with the v6).

First check the plug and wires for breaks or being loose.

Nezt check the Voltage supply and ground circuits from the PCM.
Connect the positive lead of a voltage meter(grey/black #1) wire terminal,
and the negative lead to the black(#2) wire at the connector.
Turn the key "on" the voltage should be 5 volts.
If its incorrect check the wires to the PCM.
If they are in good shape you'll hav to hav the dealer(or other qualified tech) check the PCM.

To check the TPS operations, reconnect the plug.
Back probe the Dark blue wire(#3) on the TPS plug,
connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the probe.
And the Negative lead to a good engine ground.

Turn the key On.
With the throttle closed the voltage should read about 0.6 volts.
Slowly open the throttle, the voltage should increase smoothly to aprox 4.5volts at WOT.

If the test reads incorrect, replace the TPS.

I found out what the problem was..... The car is a POS! So I bailed, and traded her in for a 02 Impala LS. And I have to say that that car is effin sweet!!! I only got $400.00 for my Grand Am. I wonder why... The thing was falling apart anyway, so I figured that its time for it to be someone elses problem.... Thanks guys!!!
