Interpreting OBD II Codes

I read or heard somewhere, (can't remember) that one can interpret OBD II alarm codes by jumping some pins together and watch dash lights flash in sequences. Has anyone else heard of this or know it to be true?

I took my car to Autozone to get some (at least two) faults read with their OBD II. The Evap Emission code was read but not the other one, I believe it is something to do with with a s wheel speed sensor. So, I am wondering if I can read it myself.

What is the question, wheel speed sensor, alarm codes, try and be more precise here? Bcm and abs codes must be read on a full function professional scanner, not AZ.

I guess my questions were:

1.) Why can't autozone read all of my codes?

and

2.) Can I read all of them by using the "jumper" method (if it even exists)?

All the codes other than emissions related must be read on a highline scanner such as Snap On or Genysis and others, for bcm, trans and abs issues. I didn't understand the "alarm codes" question.
