Question Speedometer quit working

95 Mercury Mystique, 6 cylinder with 5 speed manual trans.

Speedometer started bouncing around erratically a few day ago & now has quit working. Also the odometer is not working anymore either. I am leaning towards this being the vehicle speed sensor. Does anyone else have any ideas. Also how hard is the vss to replace & an approximate cost?

Re: Speedometer quit working

Call ford or napa and price a new unit. On my 97 ford E40D it was on the transmission tail shaft held in by one bolt. The same on the 4R70W and the manual transmission
You should be able to check with an ohm meter connected if you are on jack stands. The meter should go from zero to one as the unit is in drive and moving slowly.
