Oil problems

This is a sort of general question, and I'm pretty desprite for an answer.

In my 99 alero my oil ascending unit broke, and oil was spilling out. I didn't relieze it until the light came on, and i was less then a half a mile from home, so i idiotically tried to make it home. The car died, and i pulled over. Anyway, we put oil and a new unit in it and it works for yet another day.

Why is it the car is still ticking like it has no oil, and it is also getting so hot it starts to smoke up? I asked my father and grandfather, but they just said that the damage is already done, and that the engine is getting oil, but its not enough. So, can someone please explain to me why it is getting so hot? I mean, the oil HAS to be resisting the friction, its not like there was more friction created...i'm lost. I'd just like an explaination.

When it ran dry, it can do alot of damage.
Bearings can spin, things just arenot made to run like that.

They only way to properly find out whats wrong is to take it apart.
Could Drain the oil and look for metal parts or coolant

Most lliky the head gasket is blown and thats gonna cost ya a new head if not a new motor.
