Automatic Transmission Fluid
The AW4 automatic transmission takes Dexron/Mercon fluid. Autozone and other auto parts stores will tell you to use ATF/ATF+3 which is what most Chrysler and GM trannys use - but this is a Toyota trans and was designed to use the Dexron/Mercon.
Note: The AW4 four speed automatic transmission was used in 1987 to 1990 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), & Jeep Comanche with 2.5L & 4.0L engines. The AW4 was also used in 1991 through 1992 Jeep Comanche & 1991 through 1998 Jeep Cherokee & 1993 through 1993.5 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.0L engines. Please correct me if I am wrong... |

Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid
You didn't mention the year of your Jeep, but that sounds about right.

Yes, the AW4 uses DexronIII/Mercon. It was used in the XJ from 87 to end of production (2001).
BTW....Did you get any water in there from the flood? To flush pull one of the lines at the radiator and remove and add ATF 4 quarts at a time. In my case one of the lines is spliced with an external oil cooler in front. I can just remove a section of the rubber hose to flush. |
