Question Fuel Pump Problem?

Has anyone had this problem? I have a 96 galant automatic, I drove home from work, stopped at a convenience store, and would not start. It turns over but wont start. I disconnected the fuel lines to the fuel pump, and what I noticed is that when the engine cranks it shoots gas (a few inches) but there does not seem to be a prime. With a test light I saw the pump does get power when cranking, but does not when I believe there should be a prime. I cant hear a prime like I can with my Blazer or Bronco. I tried the same tests with a friends 2001 galant. No power when you think there should during a prime, but there is power when cranking. His starts however.
My question is: Does this sound like a fuel pump? Can anyone hear their fuel pump prime? How far should the pump shoot gas with lines disconnected? I replaced the 2 relays for engine control in the dash, which did nothing for me.
I'm thinking fuel pump problem, but would like to hear any opinions. Thanks, PeterM

Re: Fuel Pump Problem?

The two fundamentals are fuel and spark. If you have compared your fuel and it seems the same as another car, then now compare the spark. I would imagine that the problem could be almost anything.

Re: Fuel Pump Problem?

If your motor turns over but doesnt fire you have to check to see if you are getting fuel and spark. You turn your key to ON and if you are not hearing our fuel pump prime then better check the connections and the ground at your starter motor.
