Vinegar smell when heat or AC on ???

Okay here's something new for me. My wife has a 2002 impala. The other day when I got in it. I turned the heat on and had a VERY stronger vinegar like smell coming from the vents. This smell was not there the day before when I drove it. We don't eat, drink, and try not to smoke in it. So I know it not something that got spilled or something. The vinegar like smell only comes when I have the blower on (heat and AC). I thought it might go away after a while (day or so) but it's still there. Even with the motor NOT running and the heat or air on the smell comes out of the vents. So I'm pretty sure it not anything under the hood causing the smell.

Anyone had this before? What causes the smell? How can I rid the car from the smell?

I think there is a cabin ( passenger compartment) air filter, that might need changing.

Re: Vinegar smell when heat or AC on ???

Okay, Do you know where this might be located? I'll check to see If I can find it. But if not it would be neet to know I should look.

Anyone else have any ideas? It came over night, seems like if it was a "Cabin Filter" I would have noticed the smell getting stronger and stronger over a few days. But this was not there one day, then there the next.

I'm not saying you are wrong tractorboy. I'm just looking for more ideas. Thanks

It sounds like a possible refrigerant leak to me.
