63 VW next up

Finished the Illustrator work (7 hours on the computer and 3 in the pencil drawing so far.)

I'm ok with it.

This car is the Airkewld car http://www.airkewld.com

Jada toys has made a toy of it. 2180 cc motor with a custom exhaust. Scared the hell out of me one day lol.

Awesome work....Awesome!!!
When outlining your original pencil sketch in Illustrator, how many layers do you use? Do you just have the two...one of the base pic and one for the new lineart, or do you have a seperate layers for wheels, doors, windows etc...

Re: 63 VW next up

I normally have a total of 4 layers.

1 is the pencil drawing on the bottom layer. Set the layer to template.

2 is the contour line of the car. I normally set it to 1.5 point width. This does not include the shadow.

3 is the lines in the car. I look at this layer as being what I would want to see if my drawing was a coloring book or rather the lines that would be necessary to make this a basic car drawing.

4 is the hilites and shadow lines. I do not make fillable shapes in Illustrator. My lines intersect and I use the scissor tool to trim them back. You can not for example click on a side panel and add color. All rendering is done in Photoshop.

However if I were to export my Illustrator work as a tiff file then reimport it I could use Live Trace and turn it into a fillable vector based object. I know many awesome artists that use the vector program only and they have amazing results. I prefer Photoshop as it is more in line with where I came from. Who knows...I might change things up soon.

Trying to get my brain to follow this last bit.
So when exported as a tiff, do the layers merge down to one?
Then "Live Trace" picks up the the lines and defines new vector objects?

Got to see if Expression has this ability, this could be useful if it's there.

Great image, are you going to create a "texture" effect for the cloth top?
Interested to see how you do that. Thanks for sharing so much.

Re: 63 VW next up

correct

a tiff file is raster based so I save it as that and then bring it back and new vector objects are created. It becomes similar to the way I did that Monster truck a while back.

Amazing.
I know it's late, and i Saw the air-suspension Bugs that "Airkewld" has, but look like the rear wheel has a camber problem?
Any way the drawing is amazing! Realy Amazing.
Airkewld has fantastic cars, i wish that here in Brazil i could find parts for bugs like you guys.

Bye
Magliano

Re: 63 VW next up

got a couple tweaks and a couple things comin but I'm pretty ok with it. His windows actually have a greenish tint in the photo I have and I really like the top for some reason.

Fun car to draw.

More coming real soon.
