Low power under 2500

90 Gt with 5sfe motor. 150k miles.

Minimal power under 2500 rpm, then the motor comes to life, prcatically surges. I have only had the car 1 week, previous owner didn't think about it being prob, just always let clutch in at 3000+ rpm all the time......and just replaced clutch 6 months ago...lol

Replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotos, air filter.

Thinking next to try injectors along with fuel filter.

Anyone with similar problem or suggestions welcome.

Re: Low power under 2500

I have a 90 ST and everything under the hood is practically brand new, radiator, distributor, alternator, timing belts, battery, intake & exhaust manifolds, injectors, fuel rail, spark plugs and cables, water pump, oil pump, a/c compressor & drier, brake booster and master cylinder, and new clutch. And on top of all that I just had a 3 angle valve job and port and polish done to the cylinder head. The car only has about 26k miles more than yours and it does the exact same thing. Don't quote me on this and there may be someone in here that would know better than me, and you could also even call a Toyota tech. and ask him, but if I had to guess I would say it had something to do with the way the CPU is programmed, and I am about to have mine reprogrammed so I'll let you know if the problem ceases afterwards.

Re: Low power under 2500

Thanks for the input, Pat.

Just an update, I have replaced the fuel filter with no change.

I do however notice that while the motor is still very cold, it has significantly better throttle response under 2500 rpm. My thought is that the cold start injector is providing more fuel.

Pat, your thought on the programming may be correct.

Appreciate any posts if anyone has similar probs.

Anyone ever see dyno tests on stock 90-93 Celicas?
