1997 Cav Shifter Knob

Ok. This may be a dumb question or not, but can the damn shifter knob on a 1997 Cavalier come off? How so? I thought most cars have a shaft with threads and it just unscrews? This is not so on my car, I think I screwed it up b/c it spins (not easily) but doesn't seem like it is on threads. Any ideas?

It's in the owner manuel but if you have lost your there the clue!
1- Look behind the knob you'll see a U pin. Take it out with a screw driver and pull the knob!

2- No there no threads
