Are you smart?

Formally, given a partially ordered set (P, ≤), an element u of P is an upper bound of a subset S of P, if s ≤ u, for all elements s of S.

WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS MEAN?? It's part of my 'scavenger hunt over the weekend'. I just have to copy this and define it so I'm not asking you guys for help but If I want to become an engineer I want to damn well understand what this means and/or the reason for it.

this too:
For some natural number n, n·n = 25.

Similarly, if Q(n) is the predicate "n is even", then

is the (false) statement

For some even number n, n·n = 25.

Re: Are you smart?

I Googled that whole sentence and got a link to Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Least_upper_bound

Does that help??

It's been far too long since I worked with set theory to be much help; therefore.....

This...is a job for Super Tangie!

Except for the natural number question: n, where n·n = 25. The answer is 5.

Okay, so I'm guessing here that your < or = to symbols are in place of "proper subset" meaning that the superset cannot equal the subset in terms of how many elements exist (the subset and superset are not exactly the same). Since the subset and superset cannot be exactly the same, this means that the upper bound of the subset S (being called u) must be larger than any other element of S (called s).

Wow, I didn't think I had it in me... I haven't had Discrete in about 4 years now... almost 5.

Okay, the diagram that you have does not state that some "even" number n results in n^2 = 25. It states the first sentence. 5 is a natural # (counting #'s is another name) so you can use 5 as that answer. The diagram actually "reads"

"For every n that is an element of (the set of real #s), Q(n) -- which I am not sure of since Q is not bolded, but could mean that n is a rational # (since Q is the set of all rationals) AND (the carat is "and" for those who don't follow) P(n, n, 25) which does result, as was said, in 5 x 5 = 25.

Tangie you're the (wo)man!

The wierd thing is that after you explain it I can see it, but befire that I had no idea. Damn my inattentiveness in higher level math lectures But I'm by no means a math or engineering major so I guess I shouldn't feel bad. But YOU Dyno... for shame

You really wanna know? here it is!

We all have 'catching up to do' since we only have the class twice a week soooo he makes us learn these ten or more equations per week. For the weekend I have:

Define: universal quantifiers, Do 3 of truth statements and 3 false staements, Existensial Quantifiers, Same as that, 3 T and 3 F

Define Upper Bound, 3x, least Upper Bound 3x, Lower Bound 3x Greatest Lower Bound 3x, Mathematical induction 3x, Proof by Contradiction 3x, Continous and Discrete, 3 of each and I've never seen these words before!!! Which reminds me, I'm procrastinating. Due wednesday.

Thanks for the explanantion Tangie.
