Welded or LSD?

I've got some money..some. Should I get the differential welded or install an LSD? How much does an LSD cost without labor, how much does labor cost on welding a diff?

Re: Welded or LSD?

i got my s14 VLSD internals for 50 bucks. i could have gotten the whole diff + axles (which you need in order to install a skyline diff) for 220. installation is more when you're trying to install internals though. welding isnt good man, i have a friend with an old RWD 4AGE swapped starlet and he breaks his axles all the time because of the welded. not only that but corning will always feel wierd. just go with a vlsd.

Re: Welded or LSD?

ive been stuck on this for so long now. at times ive wanted to weld it, but then i think about how much cornering is going to suck and dont end up doing it. and then i want to go vlsd, but then i hear it doesnt work all that great. id love a nismo or kaaz... but that will have to wait for greener days if you know what i mean... id say if youre strictly track use, weld it. if youre daily driven... go vlsd

oh and metalhead let us know how that vlsd works when you get it put in

Re: Welded or LSD?

I'd lean towards the LSD, sure the welded diff. works... but still its welded and who knows when the welds will break.

If it's a regular driver, you'll regret welding it..

i used to think the same thing but if you can find someone who has done it before and is real good with a stick machine... you should be fine.. as long as the weld has good penetration

EDIT: and i agree, id go with the lsd too (if i had the money)

Re: Welded or LSD?

do a vlsd if its a daily. Should only take about an hour to install. Really its pretty self explanatory once you get under there and see what you have to do. Just make sure you have it braced before you take the last bolts out lol. You dont want 70lbs falling on your chest......or face. Id get a friend to help out.

each output shaft of the differential is tied together by a device known as a viscous coupling. This is basically two slotted discs that have a silicon fluid between them. If the discs are rotated at a speed that varies relative to each other this produces friction which heats the silicon fluid up. The silicon becomes more viscous as it's temprature rises. There will be a point where the silicon will become viscous enough to hold the two discs together (this is why the discs are slotted, it is so the silicon will have something to grip to).

Re: Welded or LSD?

most vlsd users regret saving up for a lsd. viscous tends to lock and unlock whenever they please and it gets a little frustrating b/c its not consistent.

but i say +1 for the vlsd on a daily, since it does the job. (if you got a seperate daily and don't have a grand to waste, weld is about $100+shipping by Luke at zilvia.net. i think that was his name. he's had pretty good reputation for doing good welds. i think he uses a welded diff on his LS1 powered rx-7)

btw, which car are you pulling the vlsd off of?
