1995 Grand Cherokee Shifting Problems

I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee. For several months I have had problems and of course, the problem will not present itself when the mechanic drives it.

When accelerating from being stopped, I have a problem with it shifting high (between 1st and 2nd, it will rev up to about 4000 or 4500 rpms before shifting). Sometimes if I ease up on the accelerator and then try again, it shifts "normally."

Also, with this problem, it will sometimes behave as if it is in too high a gear for taking off from a stopped position (such as 2nd or 3rd). It has not stalled, but seems as if it might sometimes. The vehicle jumps a bit before it seems to find the right gear.

Any suggestions?

FYI - I had a transmission flush in May along with a fuel filter replacement and spark plug replacement. I had a new battery and terminals installed in June and a crank and cram shaft replacement a few weeks ago. I've also checked the transmission fluid level and it's fine.

Please email and post on the forum. Thanks for any help you are able to offer.

Julie

Re: 1995 Grand Cherokee Shifting Problems

You may need to adjust your TV cable to get the 1-2 shift in the right rpm range. I recently had the identical problem, and adjusting the TV cable did the trick. Here's how to do it:

On the throttle body, there are three cables - two off the front, and one off the rear. The rear one is the TV cable. Remove the white plastic cover off the cable, directly behind where it attaches to the throttle body. After you remove this cover, you can adjust the cable. To adjust, get inside the vehicle and press the gas pedal to the floor. Have a second person put the white cove back on while the pedal is pressed in. This should get you very close to where you need to be. You can fine tune from there.

Hope that helps...

TV cable (Throttle valve cable). It changes the shift points on the transmission with respect to throttle position. If it is out of adjustment it will hold your tranny in 1st gear too long (as yours is doing). It is also what makes your transmission downshift when you need to accelerate.
