Wheel Bearings

Is it common for wheel bearings to wear out on a vehicle with 112K miles on it? I have an 02 Envoy and I replaced one bearing 3 days ago and now the other one has gone bad. Is this natural, or did the mechanic sabotage my truck?

Well for what its worth my 02 Envoy has 89,000 miles and my passenger wheel bearing/hub is just starting to "thump, thump, thump". So 112k miles, I would say, isnt bad. These days replacing wheel bearings seems so much more common than before!

And by theory and with that many miles its always best to replace the wheel bearings in pairs. So Im sure your mechanic wasnt up to anything.

And how would he sabatoge a sealed no access wheel bearing, stop and think about this!

I did think about it, which is why I asked. I don't work on vehicles and haven't the slightest idea of how they function, therefore, it's completely logical for me to speculate.

Yes unfortunately it is- on any make/model. A family member has been thru both rear wheel bearings on his 2000 toyota avalon @ 40Kmi, my parents have had both fronts replaced on their 2003 buick rendezvous (just out of warranty). GM recently sent my parents a letter in regards to getting reimbursed for both front hub replacements! Cant say the same for toyota or ford, that's for sure.

Unfortunately it is now... I had a 1992 Saturn SL1 - 240,000 miles, never replaced any wheel bearings. 2000 Alero 108,000 miles, replaced both fronts twice, due to wheel speed sensor failures.

Two mass produced GM vehicles. You get lucky with some... others, not so much. They are sealed, non-serviceable hub assemblies so it luck of the draw.

I replaced on of the front wheel bearings at 127k miles. The other one was fine and at $500 per side I'll roll the dice.

Typical GM dealership charge is ~$500 per side. Independant shops are typically a couple hundred less.
