Angry idler pulley

I have an 88 gl10 turbo 1.8l I heard a strange noise other day sounded like a bad pulley happened at a traffic light then engine died . popped the hood no obvious problems so popped the disty cap just for a look and had my wife bump the starter a couple of times guess what disty doesnt turn. OOps timing belt go bye bye. Got into last night Surprise!!! belt didnt break idler pulley came off cant really tell about any other damage just wondering if anyone ever had the same problem.

Re: idler pulley

Well, you know what they recomend!

You suppose to check/verify everything before you assemble your timing belts back.

I am the one who ignored that!

I tried tensioner pulleys. They gave me some play. Big deal!!!
I have not even try to check my idler sprocket!

One day I heard a funny noise from the engine. I ignored it.

Ended up with frozen idler pully and as a result: broken belts and bent oil pump sproket.

Next time I do timing belts I will install ALL new componnents.
This way I hope to avoid unneccessary headaches.

Re: idler pulley

thanks for the reply , after closer inspection it looks like the idler just lost its bearings and spun off the shaft chewed the belt up pretty good though and dimpled the plastic cover a little but i now have it back together and other than having to adjust the timing i think all is well . I am having a little trouble checking the timing as I have a turbo model and according to my haynes manual for the turbos the timing mark should be on tha crank pulley but i cant find it found the set of marks at the flywheel housing supposedly used for non turbo models not sure which one I am supposed to use.

I am sorry. I cannot help you here. Mine is SPFI.

You will be able to find a lot of information at www.ultimatesubaru.net. This site is great. Go to "Older generation Subaru"
