broken steering column HELP

the other day I stopped at the gas station to fill up (94 blazer 4x4 4.3L W) when I went to start the truck to leave the ignition switch broke and would not turn so having a short fuse I beat the steering column with a hammer and broke the switch off so I could start it with pliers, (also had problems with the turn signals and the wipers so I was going to replace the column anyway) well today I went looking in the local salvage yards to find out the column from any other year will not work in a 94? anyone know why? no one can tell me why but even GM says 94-94 only? is the wiring harness different since a 93 looks the same and has the same steering box?
