SLR Trng photos-technical, (56k death) - and juicy free flow conversation

I decided to put this here because my last thread about it was here and some people wanted some photos. If the mods feel it needs to be in the photo section no big deal.

Anyways, I just got back from the MB training center in Rancho Cucamonga. It was a great 5 days and actually really relaxing not being at the dealership for an entire week. The instructors were really cool and mellow. The first thing they said when we arrived was that this class "was just a bunch of car guys talking about cars". They created a really relaxed atmosphere and we had a lot of good laughs. They also told us we wouldn't be here if we weren't the best of the best so we could be trusted with anything. All the students were given keys to the training center and we were able to go anywhere we wanted. I even caught a glimse of the new CL (216 chassis). It looks alright but AMG definitely needs to toughen it up a bit for me to be interested.

I didn't know their policy on photos but one of the first things our instructor said was that we were encouraged to take photos. They even handed out disposible cameras to the guys who didn't have digitals. A lot of techs that come thru the training don't see SLR's very often so they were told to take pictures of certain procedures so they have atleast something to go by. I, so I'm told, have Jay Leno's SLR waiting for me on Monday so we'll see how that goes.

So here's some of the more interesting photos I took. I have a bunch more so if there's something you want to see that's not here just ask and I'll post it.

First up, just a racked SLR. Special lifts are required that bolt into the body in order to lift the car even. If they're not used you may crack the body...which then needs to be sent to England to be repaired.

Some under-car photos with the under panels installed:

looking towards the front..

looking towards the rear..

left and right holes lead to the brake cooling ducts...the center hole leads to the differential fluid cooler..

those two vents (below the exhaust tips) help keep the rear engine compartment cool, mainly the exhaust system. a common problem is people smashing those things closed on speeds bumps and driveways which leads to 02 sensors overheating..

Under-panels removed:

looking towards the front. differential fluid cooler at the top of the photo, rear suspension in the middle, fuel tanks just in front the rear suspension

up close with the fuel tanks and driveshaft

up close with the world's fastest shifting automatic transmission ($20,000)

looking towards the rear, front suspension up close

bottom of the engine (it's a dry-sump system which is why the pan looks like that)

a couple close-ups of one side of the front suspension

rear suspension

A few photos of the removed engines ($195,000):

Exploded view of the dry-sump system:

Cut away front half of the car..

nice little muffler shot...

And for you boost freaks:

supercharger cut out

intercooler cut out

intercooler plumbing...this was used to demostrate filling and bleeding procedures:

Conclusion...this vehicle rocks. Hopefully someday I'll drive it on a track and find out what it can really do.

Did I miss anything??

I've waited my whole life to hear those words from you!!

99cavy, true about the panels making it look like a tank. They warned us to never drive the vehicle with them off since they are critical to the body stucture.

Interior Pics?

I love the SLR interior, especially the starter button.

Nein!!!!!!! Sorry, didn't really take any photos of the interior. It was all covered in our protective covers anyways.

If you really do get Leno's car on Monday, maybe you'll get to meet him. That would be sweet. Bring the camera with you.

Not really a chance of me seeing him. The dealership is building a brand new service facility and to make room they had to move half of the technicians to a satellite location in west LA. That's where I work and where the SLR rack is located. Plus, high profile actors like that usually have someone to take care of their cars for them...like scheduleing appointments and pick-up & delivery.

Well when you do that can you put an AF sign on your car so we can get some free pub while LAPD chases you on live TV?

if a photo is worth a thousand words, you'll need two.

one of you getting sideways, the other of you being tazed and arrested..
