Could be running too rich # 1, what changed that generated this problem though, floors all good, no change in exhaust design?

well heres the story, yesterday while i was driving my car kept dying then i figured out it was because part of my gas lines were rubber and the rubber was dry rotted and cracked so i fixed that, and that was around the time it started noticing the strong smell, i dont know if that would have anything to do with it, im pretty sure the floors are all solid, and a few weeks ago i replaced the crossover pipe and got a cherry bomb put on, but like i said i checked the exhast and it doesnt seem like theres any leaks or anything on it, it might be running too rich, how would i fix that?

So this started afetr the exhaust work, if so start looking closely at connections. If the carb is loading up ( to rich) the engine would stumble or falter at idle normally.

Check in the engine compartment are you getting anyblow back around the valve covers plugged vent lines and ect. Look good in the engine compartment. Check for cracked exhaust manifolds. The v-8 had a valve which opened with a vacuum controlled valve on one exhaust manifold. Check that this valve is free and will open and the vacuum valve is working. I think they had a temp operated valve for this vacuum valve.
I am not entirely sure when they started using these valves.

Re: choking on gas fumes

Check the fuel pump. On these engines the fuel pump will often fail and shoot gasoline out the side. The leak can start slow but will get worse and can cause other issues such as a fire. Also on check the oil for gasoline. Sometimes the fuel pump will shoot gasoline into the oil and will ruin the bearings.
