New to the site... thought I'd share

Hey everyone.

Been observing for a week or two and have been impressed with everyones work here. Also, with the free exchange of ideas and techniques!

I've been working as a Graphic Designer/Illustrator/Art Director for about 25 years and love any and all powered vehicles! Whether they be cars or aircraft.
Been drawing since I could hold a crayon! (I'll try and dig up some old work for the other post I saw on here)

Anyway, here are a some different samples:

Most recent. (Illustrator/Photoshop)

Second (All Illustrator)

Third (Illustrator/Photoshop)

Leather Jacket (airbrush/paintbrush) Sorry about the blurry pic.

Pencil Portrait

Glad to have found this forum and look forward to getting to know you guys more!

Steve

Thanks for the comments! It's nice to get compliments from your peers!!!

Here's a couple of others:
(First attempt at using nothing but Illustrator)

Entire Iceman jacket (should've posted this one first)

Another pencil I did for an H2 sq. based in San Diego

Again, thanks for the kind words!

Re: New to the site... thought I'd share

Steve, outstanding work. I like them all. I have never done anything in Illustrator or a graphics program. I have Corel on my old computer but spend all of my "art time" with airbrush and colored pencil. Keep us posted from time to time and share more of your excellent pieces.

Nice to see your great art here.
Your work is amazing

Think I've seen some of your work before, has the jacket art been posted/published
somewhere else?

Not that I'm aware of! I spoke to the guys at Auto Air once at SEMA in 2004 but have been too busy to follow up with them! I did post a couple of shots on some other forums though so maybe they migrated.

Here's my own personal jacket I did in remembrance of a good friend of mine. More of his story and an amazing artist can be found here. http://www.rareybird.com/
Bob Doty was the guy responsible for bringing the sketches of an incredible artist by the name of George Rarey back to the states after he was shot down on a fighter mission in June of '44. Bob told some great stories and was a first class individual! I just wish he was here to wear the jacket instead!!

Small world! I was originally commissioned by a friend in Norfolk to do a piece for HSL-34. I did a "Back to the Boneyard" patch and a squadron portrait that lead to the guys in San Diego to call me for the one posted. Did a lot of work for guys back when they were closing bases all over the country. I would do one "master" illustration for the CO and make individual reprint (photostats) with their names and deployments on it.

Thanks for the welcome! I was very inspired after seeing your work on here!!!

Very nice stuff! It's good to have another pro on this forum to learn from! I'm not into comp. illustration, however yours are very good! I'd like to see more hand-rendered pieces! B

I'd give you 4 thumbs up if I had 4 thumbs....your art is really good, and I especially respect the fact that you work in so many different medium (illustrator, airbrush, pencil and ink)...

Nice work....

The mediums we use are just simple tools to get what's in our head, "out" where it can be seen by others! Each "tool" is used to achieve different results. Just like a mechanic would not use a wrench to block sand before painting! (well I guess you could! )

Some tools are a bit more intimidating. Like an impact wrench! I was always scared of those things and would instead try to hand turn everything. Until I found out how much quicker and more precise they can be once you understand and know how to use it correctly/safely.

I used to HATE Illustrator! But I was asked to draw that drag bike I posted above and that it all to be done in Illus. I spent 18hours straight (inventing new swear words along the way) until I got it to where I thought it was ready. Slept a couple of hours, delivered it, and was asked to do it over again!! I was extremely dissapointed but spent the next 12hours getting it "right"! Got paid and now, over time, really enjoy working in that program. (and I've forgotten all those "words" I created!-well most of 'em)

So, the short answer is...
Use whatever medium you are comfortable in but don't avoid any "tool" that will best convey what's in your head! It would be selling yourself short and neglecting others like us who are inspired by the work of others!

ummm class dismissed!
