73 beetle speedometer wiring

i took out my speedometer to try to fix it and i did not mark the wires. i have most of them plugged in to where they are supposed to go but i need help figuring out the rest. all the diagrams i have looked at just leave me more confused. i do have the fuel gauge, high beam and illumination correct. its just the oil pressure, generator and turn signal/flasher that i have left.

Re: 73 beetle speedometer wiring

Looking @ the front of the speedo from the drivers seat the oil pressure is on the right, turn signal in the middle and the generator is on the left. If it has a rear window defogger then the green light is on about the 15 MPH. If it has auto stick temp then the red light is on about the 85 MPH. A blue high beam light about 80 MPH. Old VW's should never die.

Re: 73 beetle speedometer wiring

Dear Powercoguy,
Thankyou for your response, but i need help with what color each wire is that goes to those lights. I have tried a couple combinations but I kept blowing the fuse.

Re: 73 beetle speedometer wiring

The oil pressure warning light should be a blue/green stripe. Double check that at the oil pressure sending unit coming off the block. The generator warning light should be a blue wire doubled back to the dual brake warning light in the speedo. Double check that at the regulator, post #61, either on the generator or under the back seat. I can't remember which. The turn signal should be a blue/red stripe. Double check that at the turn signal/emergency flasher relay, post #Bl. None of these wires should blow a fuse. Something else might not be hooked up right. Hope this helps. Let me know.

Re: 73 beetle speedometer wiring

Where the wire is connected to the regulator, the terminal is marked 61. Where the wire is connected to the flasher relay, the terminal is marked Bl. Those markings tell where you have it hooked up right.
