Re: transmission swap,will it work?

If they are the same trans it will work, for the most part. The wiring harness may be different, so you may have to do some wiring. Also, the 3.9l usually has the lighter duty A-500 transmission and the 5.2l (318) usually has the A-518 heavy duty trans. If the 318 has an A-500, then that may explain in part why you need a new trans, as the A-500 usually doesn't last very long behind a V8 that gets some serious use.

A 518 trans is weak to begin with.

Re: transmission swap,will it work?

I don’t think they will interchange the 97 should be computer controlled. The 93 should not be with the exception for the TCC and OD

Re: transmission swap,will it work?

I have the same question about an 89 with 3.9 and 92 with 318. I want to know if the 92 will fit on the 3.9. I believe I don't need to worry about the computer control with the 92. The main question is, is the bolt pattern and everything for the torque converter the same. I called a local parts store and they said the 89/3.9 came with the A500 or the A904 and the 92 came with the A500 or the A727. I'm guessing that since they both could have had the A500, everything should swap? I was told the 93 might have the computer controls, so that might work for the original post here. Not sure though.

Re: transmission swap,will it work?

Dodge didn't get the higher tech A518 untill 97 in the Dakotas. Your 92 will have electronic OD and TCC and if you have the V8 its a A518. As for the swap are they both 4x4 or 2wd?

Re: transmission swap,will it work?

Both are 2wd. This guy wants to sell me his 89 with the 3.9. I have the 92 with the 318 that I used the crank and rods for my 77 Power Wagon (W200). The 92 is just a parts vehicle that I needed to get rid of when I moved, and the guy I bought it from did not give me the pink. It is a salvaged title anyway. I was about to just take the saw to it and chop it up, but the tranny and wheels are good. If I buy the 89, will my tranny work? Will it bolt up? I've read about setting it up for the OD if the other one didn't come with it. Other than that, it should bolt up, shouldn't it? I looked at a website with rebuilt tranny's, and it shows the same tranny's fitting both vehicles. So I should go ahead and spend the $100 for the 89? It’s supposed to run fine. If needed, I’ll just do the mod for the OD and TCC.

Re: transmission swap,will it work?

That's $100 for the truck that needs the tranny. I have a parts truck with a tranny. From what I've been able to figure out, I believe my tranny, from the 92 w/318 will fit the 89 w/3.9. Is this correct? I may just need to modify it for the TCC and OD, that is, if the 89 doesn't have OD and TCC already.

Re: transmission swap,will it work?

The junk yards around here don't like to pay you for your junkers. I know they do in other areas. Just not here. That's why I want to find out first if it will work on the older truck.
