Q re Dealer-installed Nav System

I am looking at buying a new I35. One of the salesmen says that the dealership can install a navigation system in any I35. Is this correct? If this can be done, is this the same system that the manufacturer installs?
Should I be wary of having a dealer do this work?

Factory Nav System

Have you had any luck with your navigation system? I'm just about to buy a 2000 I30 and, although I successfully had the Garmin Street Pilot custom installed in my 2001 MB SL500, I'd like to install the Infinity factory system. Any suggestions?

I wound up buying a G35 with a navigation system, instead of an I35. I'm not certain about the I35, but I've heard that a G35 cannot be retrofitted with the stock Infiniti nav system, or at least not for anything like a reasonable price. Therefore, I'd guess that it's equally unfeasible in the I30/35.

The reason I went with the G35 over the I35 is that the I35's stock nav system was the old fashioned CD-based type, rather than a DVD-based system like the G35's. That means that you'd have to buy several CD's to cover the whole country, rather than having one DVD to cover it as in the G35. Two different CD's covered the area in which I live, in upstate New York. I would have had to stop the car to load a new CD when I drove to the east, and change it again when going back to the west. Too much of a hassle, IMO.

I doubt that you'd want to spend a lot to install such an outmoded system. I'd suggest going with the latest version of an aftermarket system like the Street Pilot that you had in your SL500. You can find some ideas at this URL.
