Issues with ignition timing

I have a 91 Civic DX with a D15, last week it melted a rotor and went out of time. So I changed the rotor and it ran fine for about 3 miles and it fried another one. So I went a little further and put a different distributor in it. This worked to get it running, and it no longer fries rotors, but it runs like crap. I timed the new distributor, but it's advanced as far as it will go and still misses and backfires. I was wondering if anyone knew what the problem could be. I checked the cam timing and that is correct. Im not very familiar with Hondas and I'm to the end of my knowledge as to what could be causing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Issues with ignition timing

First thing I would check to see is if its 180* out of time, easily checked by swaping the wires on the distributor for the one directly across from it, if it runs fine then leave the wires that way and make a note that its 180* out. If that doesnt fix it check and make sure its the right distributor, if you got one for an mpfi insted of dpfi it might cause that same problem.

Re: Issues with ignition timing

His motor wouldnt even fire at all if it was 180 out. It would be trying to fire on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke.

And if he got a mpfi dizzy, I dont think it would even try to run a dpfi system since dizzy wiring and different.

I'll bet the reason your dizzy was frying rotors is because your shaft bearing went bad and started to heat the shaft up so much that it started to melt anything in contact with it.

I really think its your firing order. Heres alittle something to help you:
