common problems...
Well, first off, not all cars will have the same problems... BUT for the GSX model, there have been a few complaints generally about the same thing... They are as follows...
1- Transfer case... Supposedly fixed for the '98-'99 model... 2- Engine "ticking"... Very common thing in mitsu engines, only should be concerned when progressively louder and doesn't dissappear after engine is war,... That's about all i've heard that are common... I'm sure there are a couple of others, but none come to mind right now... I have a '99 GSX myself, and i haven't had any problems really... I do have some engine "ticking", but once the engine is warmed up, it goes away... The dealership replaced the valve lifter and the "ticking" hasn't been heard of since... The vacuum hose has been replaced, and i had a minor leak in my AC hose... That's been the extent of my problems with my car... Just keep in mind that proper caring for a turbocharged engine is a pain in the ass... Proper warm up and cool down periods are a must... Synthetic oils, highest octane gas, etc etc... =) Basically what i'm saying is you can avoid MOST problems by taking care of her... =) |

So the '99 GSX isn't really worse than other cars? It isn't more likely to break down, because that is what I have been hearing. Well I sure hope it isn't because I want one and I dont want it falling apart on me.

the transfer case is a recall item, take it to the dealer and they will inspect it. If the transfer case is leaking they will replace it for you. The engine "ticking" is caused by bad valve lifters. I have a '98 GSX and this has happened twice. The dealer will replace them. THe only thing you should be really concerned about would be the dreaded carnk-walk, it can affect any 2G Turbo Eclipse. I really have not had any problems with mine that have been a surprise, overall a pretty reliable car considering...

I would highly recomend a Turbo timer.. it will allow your turbo to cool down properly after being driven.. This will help your turbo to last much longer.. Id advise it for any turbo car.
