93 starter selonoid

93 starter selonoid keeps going out just got my 3rd one within about 7 months anybody have any idea why this is happening

Have you checked out the starter motor itself as well?

It may be likely that you are getting poor current used to engage the solenoid to the contacts. When it tries to activate it, the low power available decreases the pressure holding the contacts and they burn up. This is the small wire circuit to the solenoid.
Grounds would be involved but at this time not a priority since you havent mentioned other engine troubles.

That could be caused by a poor connection or resistance (frayed wire) anywhere on that smaller wire back through a start relay, ignition key, or even the original source like the battery or even its connectors. If it is you would have to determine where its failing or restricted.
You should get 12.7V there while trying to start.

An idea may be to remove the large connection from the solenoid, wrap or insulate it safely away and have someone attempt a start while measuring it. NOTE:It would be good to remove the positive terminal from the battery first and replace it when your setup, ready for the testing and measuring.

Another alternate setup would to be to remove that wire and place a load on it like a headlamp and check for connection or wire restrictions while the key is in start trying to light the headlamp.


The complexity of troubleshooting this problem is that these bad connections only reduce the current when a load is applied. It reveals itself when you see a voltage reading across a bad connection where theres not suppose to be any.
Are you still hearing the click after it fails?
Are the points burning out in it?
Is the area getting dirty or wet often?
Are you experiecing long starts to get the engine running?

Does the starter turn over slow?

On my 94' about 1 to 2 seconds of cranking starts it.

Just a thought from when I replaced my 98's starter. I bought one at a Delco reman shop in the area... when I returned the old one I commented that I wondered what caused it to go bad>

The fellow asked if there was oil hanging on the oil pan. He said that oil drips into them and causes them to fail. Mine had given hard engagement symptoms for months but only occasionally. I had only a few drops of oil hanging right above it on the oil pan--but he rebuilds them day in and out. My oil never drips onto the driveway.

Do you have a drippy oil pan above the starter?
