Need advice lower end D15B 91
I have a 91 Civic I recently replaced the head on. From what I can gather from this and other forums it's a D15B/1/2/7 SOHC Non-VETC 62-102 HP. I was wondering if it's possible to pull the pistons out the bottom and replace the rings?. I would much rather do that beens I just finished the upper end. And before anyone says it, I know I should have done this when I had the head off. I also believe the rings caused the valve failure in the first place. Thanks in advance

Don't see any problem with this, because this is how things are done normally anyway on most of the engines (if not all)

Re: Need advice lower end D15B 91
Sorry, but no. Pistons have to come out the top. Also, trying to compress the rings and get the piston back in from the bottom would pretty much be impossible.

I think I was wrong
Sorry, I did that thing like 10 years ago last time, and should have forgotten... Please disregard my previous post. It is probably no problem to remove pistons this way, but it is pain in the ass to install, if at all possible.

Re: Need advice lower end D15B 91
i'm not sure how your gonna do it. How r u gonna remove crankshaft? Its bolted into the tranny's flywheel or flexplate. Will you be able to fit the pistons in and out between the crank and the block?

Re: Need advice lower end D15B 91
Thanks for the replies...I guess I'm going to have to pull the head...been there done that...This time I'm leaving the intake and exhaust on the head...I'll break the exhaust at the 3 bolt yoke and bracket and just disconnect all the crap off the intake...I don't want to pull the crank and I don't want to even think about getting the pistons back in from the bottom...Do any of you have suggestions on what I might look for while I'm doing the rings?...I used to always send my bottom end work out to a machine shop...but this is for my car and I'm too cheap...thanks in advance
PS:Any suggestions on where to buy the rings? |

Re: Need advice lower end D15B 91
Yeah, I always leave the intake mani on. It's pretty easy to just unbolt the exhaust mani from the head and slide it out. Getting to those 3 bolts that connects to the A-pipe is a pain. You at least should rent a hone and re-hone the cylinders before putting the new rings in. And for the rings, the local autoparts store should do fine.
