Mclaren Mp4/5B Color.....

Hello

I Just got the Tamiya Mclaren MP4/5B and after looking at the Tamiya Decals, Iv'e noticed that the red Decals seem much to light. Would I be wrong in assuming that Tamiya TS-49 would be a much better mach to the actual car?

Thanks

The decals are the right colour.TS49 is nothing like the red of the McLaren.TS36 is a better match or Finishers MP4 red if you can get hold of it.TS49 is too red and not orange enough. Here's a picture of the actual car that I took. After seeing it in person I would certainly go towards a more orange shade. The decals are in my opinion a perfect match to the colour of the real car.If you put the decals aside TS36 the TS36 is still too red.Match your paint to the decals and you will have the best shade.

Here is the picture.

Re: Mclaren Mp4/5B Color.....

I have recently used a Humbrol fluorescent orange on a 1:43 Mp4/4 and that came out very close to the decals. Being an enamel, I won't be using that on my MP4/6, though...

Bikouros, just remember that the illusion created by photographs is that the red is much "redder" than on the actual car. On the bikes forums somebody posted two pics a while ago of two bikes, one with TS36 and one with TS49. He was also amazed at how similar it looked on the pics, but on the models itself it looked very different.

I'd also advise TS36 - just remember to use it over white!

Red is the most difficult color to get across in photos, the cars were flourescent red , not orange at all...that's just an impression someone got from bad photo reproduction.

Re: Mclaren Mp4/5B Color.....

I agree with you Veyron they were painted in a flourescent red paint, but from the ones I have seen in real life they certainly lean more towards an orange tone rather than red.The decals in the Tamiya kits have an orange tone to them when placed next to red paint (TS49,TS8 Etc) From the McLarens I saw at the motor museum I would say the best way to describe the colour is halfway between red and orange if that makes any sense and even with a slight hint of pink thrown into the mix. When I said 'orange' I didn't mean a true orange like say Tamiya TS 12.

Tamiya instructions call for TS-36 in all the reissues of MP4/4 thru MP4/8 kits.

Re: Mclaren Mp4/5B Color.....

I think this is one of those subjects that could be debated for a long time. It's down to personal preference in the end. Some people prefer different makes/types of paint.Pick a colour and stick with it.As long as you are happy with it that's all that matters.I am not saying TS36 is the wrong paint to use as it is called out on the Tamiya instructions as correct. But when compared to the decals for the orange/red sections it is not the perfect match.But........who says the decals are the right shade?

Hey, thanks everybody for the tips and pics. The socond car in the photo does seem to have orange to it. I'll try my best to match the colors correctlly.
