Unhappy 94 Ranger fuel pump relay problem

I have a 94' ford ranger that has been giving me problems for a year. The problem is when im driving along the truck dies and then I can start it after i sit for a little bit. As in dies I mean looses fuel pressure. I have replaced the fuel pump and checked the inertia switch, wires, fuses, grounds, and yes I put a new relay in. The thing I found out is the fuel pump looses power and I traced it back to the relay. What it looks like is that the relay is getting hot and cutting my power off. I put power to the test lead and you can hear the pump kick on and off, but if you keep putting power to the system you can make the relay quit working. I think the relay is getting too hot or something and cutting my power to the pump, but why/how is the relay doing this?

Re: 94 Ranger fuel pump relay problem

I would check the ground for the fuel pump relay. A loose ground will cause problems. A bad pump which is pulling to many amps will cause overheating.
You need an amp meter and a wiring diagram showing all grounds. I would think you would blow a fuse for the fuel pump if it is pulling to many amps. Make sure it has the proper amp fuse a heavier fuse could have been installed because it blowed.

Re: 94 Ranger fuel pump relay problem

Ok ive checked the grounds and the fuse and there all good and the pump is pulling the right amps.I found out that when i turn the key everything works right, but if you turn the key fast on and off a few times and then try to start it it just cranks and turns over. Now it will not start if you keep the key in the on position, but if you turn it to the off position and then turn it back on and start it will start. I can do this every time. Im starting to think the PCM or the ingnition switch, or maybe the ICM is not giveing the singnal. Ijust don't know and its relly getting to me.

Re: 94 Ranger fuel pump relay problem

My 1994 t-b had a recall for an ignition switch. But I had already installed a new echlin. It is on the steering column you have to loosen the two bolts holding the steering wheel and drop it slightly. They use bolts I had to use small channel locks to remove it. If you don't have a tamper proof torx socket set buy two small bolts the same size before leaving the store. Always install on the same marks clean dirty on the outside.Use a volt meter and check voltage on the large wires mine dropped to 8 volts. You have a neutral safety switch is your linkage worn or a worn switch. You can unplug it and ohm across the two connectors. Wiggle the linkage.
You also have an eec iv relay which can go bad. The ground for it should be by the computer.
I doubt you have a bad computer.
