Unhappy whining moaning sound front left

i recently had my lower control arm replaced on 98 aurora. bought new tires front end lined up. now seem to have like a constant whining or moaning sound coming from left front. like i said 4 new tires. car lined up. don't know what to do. car goes straight as an arrow down road. one would think if wheel bearing was bad the garage that installed lower control arm would of noticed a bad wheel bearing. the car has 149,000 miles on it. runs excellent. rides excellent. the noise is pretty noticeable at speed. any thoughts. still have original struts on front.

sometimes a front wheel bearing may not have a lot of axial play when it's bad, and they may not notice it unless they actually drove the car. sometimes you can pinpoint a bad wheel bearing by veering left and right at highway speeds - this loads and unloads the bearing race that has started to go bad and a change in the noise will be noticed.

I know you said the tires were new, but you may try rotating the front to the rear - just to eliminate the possibility of a bad 'new' tire. It still kind of sounds like a wheel bearing to me, that would be the most likely cause.

Re: whining moaning sound front left

I had the same thing and as someone else posted the noise would change when you steered R or L. I replaced the bearing / speed sensor ($170 part) and it went away. I also was having traction control lights changing from On to Off. That went away also. Somewhere in here someone had posted how to tell which side by the direction they turned (I think it was noise change on R change the Right bearing). Try searching for related items traction control / wheel bearing / etc. to find the right thread. Try this address, it has a detailed description of how to change and what tools are needed. http://www.howardm.net/dred98/underhood.php

It took about 1 hour for the first one and 20k later took 45 minutes for the other. My first one went out at 144k.

Also just wanted to add that the people in here are great and very helpful.

Good Luck!
