VSS sensor malfunction code

hey guys...i gotta 1997 4 cylinder camry...auto...

i was wondering what that could mean..........i pulled out the sensor that mounts on top of the tranny and the little gears seemed okay...

what could be the prblem?

It could be the sensor itself or the wiring to the sensor. First make sure the wiring is clean and not corroded. Next, download the generation 4 manual stickied at the top of this forum. It should tell you the procedure for checking the sensor.

ok, so which sensor can it be?? is it behind the gauge cluster or on the tranny?

Mike is referring to the sensor on the transmission.
