If the 1997 and 1998 are pretty much the same, I would use a 15 mm (if I recall correctly) open-end on one side and close-end on side type wrench. I use another wrench 16mm used for helping/assisting the 15 mm wrench rotate easily.
You put the close-end part of the 15mm wrench onto the center bolt of the serpentine belt tensioner. Now you put the close-end part of the 16 mm wrench onto the open-end part of the 15mm wrench. It's like connecting them together so you could have more leverage to turn the 15 mm wrench.
You turn the wrench towards the front of the vehicle. It should give enough clearance to undo the belt on the alternator and then you can pretty much release the wrench slowly and then remove the serpentine belt. Just make a note how the belt originally routed through the pulleys.
