transmission problems help please

i have a 1991 jetta and when i got it reverse worked iwas moving it yesterday and i dont have reverse or 1st gear and it wont roll back in neutral would u know of a way to fix it without having to replace the tranny.

Standard or automatic?

Assuming automatic: Check your fluid. Odds are tranny is shot.
