which turbo?

hey im asking this for a friend and i was hoping
some of you might be able to steer him in the right direction.
he has a 2004 wrx...and was wonderin if he was to
upgrade the turbo which of the 2 would be better.
he gave me 2 options but if you have any other input
on which is a good upgrade then that'd be awesome.
i believe he said the 16g td05 or the 18g off an evo i think.
i dont know much about them but thats why im askin you.
will he have to get a new tranny with this new power?
he said hes getting 300hp with a full exhaust,up/downpipe with cats out,
intake, chip and i think thats it...300 is not dyno so i dont know how accurate that is.
any input is greatly appreciated. thank you

Re: which turbo?

Since he already has the piping (i'm assuming he's still using the stock turbo) then I'd suggest getting an STi turbo. It'll bolt right up (keeping the pipes he's using now) and w/ a vf39 he could put down 350 whp fairly easily. They go for $350 - $500 w/ low mileage making them a fairly cheap upgrade for wrx owners.

Has he upgraded the fuel pump or injectors yet? He'll probably want to think about that before the new turbo.

He shouldn't have to get a new tranny w/ only 350 whp. It all really comes down to how he drives it and if he's upgraded the clutch. I'd def. leave some in the cash reserves just in case the tranny went for whatever reason (bad driving habits ) but it should hold up.

Re: which turbo?

Keep in mind the stock turbo is water cooled which is why a Subaru doesn't require a turbo-timer to help it cool down, if you switch out the turbo you may need to add the timer too.

Re: which turbo?

Look at some of the upgrade packages available on gruppe-s.com, stage 2 makes for a pretty quick car - just depends on what you want.

BTW, spend money on handling before power, tuning the suspension is as important as putting power down.

Re: which turbo?

It sounds like he's a drag-racer, though, so he may want to save his pennies and do a full-on turbo upgrade by getting the turbo, the injectors, the fuel pump, the intercooler, the timer, the management system, and the gauges. Doing it all at once will make it a system upgrade rather than just a Ship of Theseus style component upgrade. I don't know what he's got already, though, and I don't know what his uses will be, so I can't make specific recommendations.
