How long until we see brake-by-wire on production cars?

It'd be like a super ABS...

Arn't alot of concept cars now brake-by-wire?

It won't be too long till this feature comes into most cars. Infact I bet the car companies won't even announce it. It will just phase in, when cars go up to 48Volts.

The only thing that worries me is what happens if the electrics die? Do you lose all braking or can they fit some kind of safety feature?
On todays cars you just lose the power assist.

yes
it is a concern

lol
my car has a short somewhere
and everyonce in a couple of months
all of the power goes out while im driving - (lights, radio, everthything, pwer steering, power brakes)
sometimes the engine evens shuts off
but the scary part is
is that my hydraulic assisst is messed up on my brakes - so i have no brakes when the power dies- at all
i end up slowly engaging the emergency brake after i have put the car in 2nd gear

lol
well
i dont know why i told yall that
but i did so read it

Re: How long until we see brake-by-wire on production cars?

as far as when? I am pretty sure the new Mercedes SL has brake by wire.

With the new 42volt electrical systems begining we are going to see some pretty impressive stuff. Things like and alternator and starter combined into one unit. "fly' by wire for pretty much every control.

it will be damn cool (and no more bleeding of brakes).

so you're expecting electrically actuated brakes, rather than electronically controlled hydraulic brakes?

Yes. DC motors [from my view] would control the actuation of the caliper pistons.

well I guess we'll have to wait and see... electro-hydraulic brakes are a competing technology that seems to have at least some following.
