Yakima lowriders and crossbars

I just bought an Xterra, and I've noticed that the roof rack isn't wide enough to carry more than two kayaks. I was wondering if any of you have experience using the Yakima lowriders to mount a second set of crossbars above the factory rack. Was there excessive wind noise? Did you use a wind ferring with the Yakima rack?

I figure this is my best course of action, but I want to avoid my roof singing everytime I get on the highway.

Thanks guys. Lots of good reading here...

Re: Yakima lowriders and crossbars

Hey, Jeff The Yakima lowriders work perfectly on the Xterra. I moved my rack system from my old Rodeo to the 2004 Xterra I just bought; took me ten minutes. Luckily, they share the same upright style.

Word of caution though, if you add the paddle holders, check your total vehilce height. You might find you're a little too tall to go in some parking garages.

Where do you paddle? We've got the mighty James River here in downtown Richmond, VA, Class 3-4

Re: Yakima lowriders and crossbars

Thanks for the reply Chris. I'll be buying the rack Yakima rack shortly...the stock Xterra roof rack just isn't wide enough. I guess I'll deal with any problems (wind noise, height, etc) when they arise.

As for paddling, usually in WV or western PA/MD. I've been down to the James a few times, but for the drive (I'm near DC), I usually head out west.

I'm liking the X so far...lotsa fun.
