98 V6 Camaro Gear Grind

I have a 98 Camaro V6. If I'm going more than 10 miles per hour and try to go in to 1st gear it grinds. It grinds even though my foot is all the way down on the clutch. That's the only time it happens. Does anyone know what the problem is?

A worn clutch that's begging for replacement?

Check the fluid level in the clutch hydraulic master cylinder.

Re: 98 V6 Camaro Gear Grind

I just bought this car and the previous owner told me that it has always had this problem. He had the clutch replaced a little over a year ago.

1st gear may be going out, but make shure the clutch is not going out first. have a tranny shop drive it and they will tell you.

Re: 98 V6 Camaro Gear Grind

I guess I should get some professionals to take it for a test drive.

Re: 98 V6 Camaro Gear Grind

Does it pop out of gears or just grind? and does this only happen when you first start the car and attempt to take off?

It just grinds. Only 1st has this problem and it happens whenever I down shift to 1st and I'm going faster than 10mph. It also seems to happen if I'm stopped and attempt to take off. I've gotten a feel for it and if I slide the stick slowly in to first it doesn't grind. If I put it in too quickly it does grind. (When I say put the stick in I actually mean how fast I move the handle, not how fast I release the clutch)

I'm gonna say, slow down before going into first.... that's how I'd fix it... I'm a slacker like that

Someone else told me that it seems like it's the synchro.
