Need to know what a part is

Hello. I'm looking for info on what a valve of some sort is. It's located between the IAC valve and the air cleaner housing on a 92 Geo Metro. It's a black round container, about 1.5 inches diameter, and about 2-3 inches long, with a two hoses coming out of it, one on each end. Any idea what that is? Thanks for any help you can give me!

Dan

It is called a silencer. I assume it's some type of muffler but don't know for sure.

It also acts as a drier and a pulse buffer for the air, so condensation doesn't build up in the IAC solenoid, and the IAC gets a nice constant feed of air, not in pulses(from the "gulping" of the cylinders drawing air in). It's not necessary, but it helps a lot. Without it, you could experience a slightly erratic idle, and pre-mature failure of the IAC solenoid.
