Hello folks; first post on this forum. My '01 Altima is in need of a transmission fluid change. I'm a bit unsure of the correct fluid to use. Owners manual says use Nissan Matic-D. Haynes says '93 thru '01 use Dexron IIE or Dexron III and '02 and later can use either one. My local dealer says the Dexron is all they use. Can you Nissan experts please confirm I can use the Dexron/Mercon III vs. the special Nissan fluid? The dealer wants $5.82 per quart for it.
Thanks for reading and have a great day/night.

Re: Question about ATF compatibility
Dexron III is the ATF to use. Each is compatable with the other. I don't pay $5 a qt for ATF.

Re: Question about ATF compatibility
because dexron is a GM trademark and so is the recipe and making process. so nissan has to use their formula, so it is different, but it works with hardware they designed based off the u.s. dexron/mercon system's design.

Re: Question about ATF compatibility
Exactly, and because Honda and others charge the same way. They have to charge that much because not as many people purchase oil with a manufactures label on it as their stock holders would like.
