1996 Cherokee 4.0 liter Dies after running very rough for 20 seconds
I just picked up a 96 Cherokee from a fella. He said it died in his driveway. He replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, cap and rotor. He can get it to run for about 20 seconds very rough and then it dies. What do you suppose the problem is? Its a 4.0 engine , Automatic trans and 4x4 . Your help is greatly appreciated. I don't want to throw a box of parts at this for something simple...
Update: I just found out this evening that the reason for it's sudden death was it overheated. The guy replaced the Waterpump and thermostat but he couldn't get it started and then suspected the fuel pump and replaced that along with the filter, distributor cap and rotor also the plugs. Thanks in advance. Last edited by coleld; 09-20-2006 at 09:20 PM. |

Getting any codes?
My first thoughts were either for clogged cat or crank position sensor.

Re: 1996 Cherokee 4.0 liter Dies after running very rough for 20 seconds
Along the lines of what Fred said.
I would change the crank position sensor if no one has done so yet. Then I would hook up a fuel pressure gage and a Vacuum gage and take some reading. If you report back with those reading, I can give you some more ideas. Note: I woudl "T" the gage into the injection using the shrader fitting on the fuel rail. |

Thank you for your help... I will replace the Crank Position Sensor and let you know how it goes. I also just found out this evening that the reason for it's sudden death was it overheated. Re: 1996 Cherokee 4.0 liter Dies after running very rough for 20 seconds
First...give us the mileage.
Then your can pull the spark plugs, and inspect them. Then, you can do a compression test. But, you will need to replace the crank position or (TDC) sensor sometime, so that will be a start. |

Milage is 184,000
Ok I will inspect the plugs, they were replaced with the cap and rotor but I will inspect to be sure they aren't fouled. I plan on replacing the CPS this weekend. What is the TDC and it's function? Where is it located? Thank you for sticking with me on this. I will update you. |

*When you inspect the plugs, you are looking for water or rust. Hopefully none, when means..um...head gasket. Compession test...for leakage of some kind....just a precaution.
*TDC sensor and CPS are same thing (Some manuals call it that.). |

Re: 1996 Cherokee 4.0 liter Dies after running very rough for 20 seconds
Well here is an update... I had a short time to check this jeep out and found what I believe to be a clogged CAT . I was able to get it running but within just a few minutes the manifold pipe was cherry red. I never seen anything like it. It was amazing. So my plan is to replace the CAT and hopefully no other damage is done. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: 1996 Cherokee 4.0 liter Dies after running very rough for 20 seconds
I have another update. Today I cut the CAT out, I didn't put a new one on yet but it did cure the overheating problem, the temp was normal.
I still have a problem with it stalling after running for about 20 seconds. It will idle pretty good then die after 20 seconds. It will start right up though. If I keep my foot on the peddle lightly it will hold idle and sound pretty good. I tried driving it but it "Lugs" "Bucks" and "Jerks" wanting to stall. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.. |
