Help With Rear Brakes

Hello. I have a 1999 extended cab GMC Sierra SLE. The problem I'm having is a massive SQUEAK coming from a little aluminum piece inside the rear brake assembly. It's like this piece is literally sitting on the rotors and rubbing. Anyone know what this piece does? It doesn't lock into place; it almost seems like it SHOULD act as a clamp almost around the brake shoes, but it doesn't work right. Any idea what that piece is, and how to get it to stop rubbing?

Re: Help With Rear Brakes

I think the piece that you are refering to is the backing plate and it is there to protect the brake rotor, pads and e-brake shoes. If it is rubbing then you can bend it back away from the rotor. If it is real bad and you are unable to get it to move away from the rotor you may have to replace it, you don't want to take it off though. Hope this helps. By the way welcome to the forum.

If you can post a picture it would help a ton.
