1998 Taurus doesnt start

Well currently I am looking to buy a car. I found a 98 taurus for $1000 obo. The problem with the car is that it cranks but does not start. The anti-theft light is flashing. Could this be something I could fix cheap or should I just pass on the car.

Re: 1998 Taurus doesnt start

At what rate is the anti-theft light flashing? Is it flashing in a pattern? If the engine is cranking, but it doesn't start, I don't think that indicates an issue with the anti-theft system. I'll check the manual, but I think the PATS system will disable the starter relay (ie: no crank).

Make sure the fuel pump shutoff switch is not tripped in the trunk. If so, the fuel pump will not be getting any power. Also, if you have access to a fuel pressure guage and spark tester, check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail and for spark.

Check the oil on the dipstick and the coolant in the radiator for signs of coolant and oil mixing. Does the engine crank like it has compression, or does it sputter and cough, etc.?

I'm thinking that $1000 for a '98 may be a bit high if you are not able to drive it and listen to it run.
