Intake Leaking?

I have a coolant leaking problem. I have checked the board & can't seem to find the same problem. When the car is cold & I start it, drive for a couple of miles I smell something burning. Open the hood & I see coolant on the trans on the drivers side of the car. It looks like it might be leaking from the intake under the TB. Funny thing is it seems to have this problem only every other time I drive the car. After a few minutes it stops & everything dries up.
I've seen that this is common with these 3800 motors, car is a 93 with 142K on it. Is replacing the intake gaskets a hard job? I do alot of my own work so I'm pretty mechanical.

are there any links to similar problems that I haven't found on here?

Thx, Jim

Re: Intake Leaking?

This may not be the intake could be the TB gasket, check it more carefully the intake manifold gaskets are not usually the problem with this engine.

Does coolant run thru the TB like it does on the LT1 motor?
Or could it be leaking where it bolts to the intake?

Re: Intake Leaking?

On that engine I believe there is coolant in the manifold, any hoses under the tb?

Re: Intake Leaking?

Coolant is present thru the manifold to the throttle body, look closely at the TB gasket.

Re: Intake Leaking?

UPDATE:
changed TB gasket, lower part of old one seem hard, tightened up upr radiator hose, replaced some worn vaccum lines, plugs, wires. Will drive it around tonight to see if the leaks have stopped. had it running & drove around the block didn't see any leaks.

Thumbs up Re: Intake Leaking?

Good news, a lot easier than pulling it apart, thorough diagnosis pays off.

still had to pull off throttle cable brkt, & a heat shield to get the TB off. one nut was a PITA to get to, had to bend a brkt so I could get it off.
