ok, for my motor, what kind of mufflers will i have to run to make that old nostalgic, almost echo-like sound with the huge cam i'm running. you guys know what i mean, its like a more tinny noise than the typical low monotonic boring sound with no soul that most loud mufflers produce.

i want this thing to make old hot rodders break down and cry when i roll by, when they remember how their old muscle cars sounded back in the day

There's someone making the old Smittys mufflers as Smithys I believe, you should be able to find them online somewhere. Or for an old school trashy cheap muffler, those old round Thrush mufflers were great. Just not sure if they are still around.

Yeah, Thrush glass packs are still avaible.

you could always use 4 into 1 heads into a really big tube going down the running board and have it end before the rear wheels with a plate over it thats old skool

i thought glasspacks were the ones that made that low monotonic grumble that kinda sounds like it has "no soul" or something like that... do they make different types? i want it to sound more clear, its hard to describe the sound, its almost a "tinny" noise, like one of them high school marching band drumline things lol, and not so monotonic

I think you'd like the old Thrush or Smittys mufflers. I'm not sure if they were called glass packs or not. But they were more obnoxious than the quieter Cherry Bombs that were true glass packs.

i always wondered about those.
how does the exhaust get out? you need another set of pipes anyway, so why have the ones on the sides on the rockers? does it make a different sound to have them?

You guys must be talking about "lake pipes". Those are straight out of the fifties. They run along the rocker and usually have a block off plate at the ends.

Some are dummies, just for the look and are not attached to the exhaust. The others require a "cutout" that is a "Y" pipe that is spliced into the exhaust system. Most of them had cables on them that atached to the dash board, very much like a manual choke.

All you had to do was pop off the pipe caps, pull the cables to open the exhaust to the lake pipes and you were good to go.

The plate over the end of the pipe doesnt compeletly cover it, its leaves about a 1/2 inch gap between the plate and the exhaust pipe.

It helps muffle the sound in a way, in hopes cops wont pull you over.

I've seen them like that with spacers behind the plate, I've seen them with louvers and screen in the plates. Also some had a solid plate with a slotted hole so the plate could swing out of the way.

i wonder what it would sound like if i had the headers im gonna use, then just straight pipes that dump right in front of the rear axle. that always looks cool at car shows when little pebbles under the car are jumping up and down as the exhaust pulses out of the pipes

I'd be concerned with exhaust that exits under the car myself. I like to get it out from underneath the car for health reasons.

You could give the straight pipes a try and see how they sound. The exhaust system does need some back pressure, (which you might get as long as the pipes are long enough) as some people will argue with me on that point.

i have heard that low rpm torque really takes a hit on free-flowing systems. also, the pipes would exit underneath the bed of the truck and therefore would likely never make it into the cab itself, though everyone loves the smell of a smallblock that is running kinda rich
