2200 power steering pump

has anyone ever replaced the power steering pump on the 2200 engine?? if so i have questions, here they are: can you do it all from the top? or do you have to go under the car for something?? did you have to move the entire cruise control thing? (the "control box" thing that the accelerator cable goes into) and did you have to remove that motor mount, the one right in the fucking way of the pump, also if you have any advice for me, i'd appreciate it, my engine started making a funny noise this weekend, it sounds like a cross between a power steering pump, and a roots style supercharger winding up, (you know that kinda moaning/whining noise they make) and i went to check the fluid, it was bone dry, i filled it up and the noise is still here, but im still assuming its the pump,

Re: 2200 power steering pump

It can all be done from above. You'd only have to go below if you need to change the lines.

Do you seriously need to ask that?

There are holes in the pully for a reason. Stick your finger through them when the holes are towards the bottom like 4 and 8 o'clock ish range. 2 of them are located behind that, and the other one is obsolete and basically in plain view. If need be I can snap a pic for you, but the diagram up top that 99 cavy posted are right on the money.

I'm working on getting up there... GM engines are quite simple..

I wana get my hands on an Audi engine or BMW. I plan on one of those being my next car and those are expensive as all fuck to have fixed. Little more complex that a 2.2, 2.4, 3400, 3800 engines.

One of the shops i deliver to, had a crate Jaguar engine sitting there on a pallet all wrapped up still... I just drooled and let my jaw hit the floor. I wanted at that thing.

Re: 2200 power steering pump

yes i know about the 2 bolts behind the pulley, did you take the resivoir off before or after the pump?? and how did it come off?? does it just pull off? (i dont see any bolt holes/mounts on this pump for it) my haynes manual doesnt say anything about the resivoir, but im assuming it comes off since this new pump doesnt have one....

Well I was too lazy to take the car cover off my girl, so i snaped a pic at work with my cam phone. There are 2 clips that hold the resovoir to the actual pump/pully portion. Then an O ring for where the resovoir seats onto the pump which should have been supplied with yours.

Red circle is the culprit.

Re: 2200 power steering pump

ok, i got it now, it looks like it just slides right off the back, it came with 2 o-rings, one the size of a nickel, and another one thats pretty small, it also came with a bolt about 2 inches long, and a washer and a nut for that bolt, that bolt does not fit in any of the "bolt holes" on the pump either, any idea what the bolt is gonna be for?

Not sure really.. Just reuse your stock ones.

Re: 2200 power steering pump

well i got it done, that was pretty much the hardest car repair ive ever done, a complete pain in the ass, unbolting the pump, and taking the hoses off wasnt bad, then i go to pull it out and find out theres a 4th bolt in the back, so i take that and then realize the pump wont come out, theres this black piece of steel that serves no purpose whatsoever, that i couldnt get the pulley past, if you look in the pic, you'll see how its right above the pulley (circled in green), anyways, what i had to do was wedge the "pulley puller" in there, with the pump still in the car, remove the pulley, so i could get the pump out, then i put the pulley on the new pump right away, sat it down in there, then put the resivoir on it, a complete pain in the ass, then getting it bolted back in its "cradle" was another pain in the ass, i said fuck it and left the 4th bolt out, the one in the back, so then, i fill it, bleed it, do all that fun stuff, only to find out the noise is still there, FUCK!! alternator is next on the list....

i did end up moving that whole cruise control assembly, i dont think i would have been able to do it without moving that

the new serpentine belt was also a complete bitch to get on, but it was nothing compared to everything else

also, i never did find out what that bolt was for

Re: 2200 power steering pump

That black piece of metal serves a purpose if you ever have to pull your engine. The one i did the pump on didn't have the cruise control assembly on it. So it was a wide open area.. What kind of noise are you hearing man? Is it a rattle like a pinging noise if you shake a penny in a tin can, or more like a squealing?
