Very Frustrated!!

i have a 91 crx si with a b20. My problem is that when i am driving the steering wheel starts to shake quiet a bit. It does this when i hit like 30mph to about 55mph then it becomes a very small shake. When the steering wheel is shaking and i press on the brake pedal the steering wheel shakes even harder.. I thought is was the front tires. so i put my pair of slicks i have and it does the same thing.. I since replaced the old rotors and brake pads. I put slotted and drilled rotors with ceramic pads. and guess what??? it still did the same thing.!!! I know that it might be the tie rods but they check out fine. Has anyone had the same problem???

When i bought the car the previous owner had replaced the wheel bearings. Could it be that they installed them wrong?? After i replaced the rotors, now that i go to press on the brake pedal. It feels that its goes up and down alot. As if the rotors had warped.. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

Well thanks for the help!!!

Re: Very Frustrated!!

If not a suspension component, are you sure you cleaned bend the rotor well, it could be on crooked..

Re: Very Frustrated!!

No no, this is probably what happend to me. My drive shafts were warped somehow (not straight) and the more power I gave it and the faster I went (usually over 30mph/ 1st gear too) the steering wheel and pretty much whole front end shaked rediculously. I took it to my mechanic and after we discovered the shaft was the issue, he swaped out the shaft (only driver side) with another used B16A shaft, problem solved. So check out that angle, cause from what you describe, it sounds exactly like that.

Re: Very Frustrated!!

I had something like this happen when I changed brakes on this girl's car, She had wore the rotors so bad they couldn't turn them. Got new ones and it shook like hell on one side... long story short, she had warper the actual hub. Junkyard gave me a complete spindle, slapped it on, no more vibration.

Re: Very Frustrated!!

Well after taking it to shop, they told me it was the rack and pinion. (i think thats how its spelled..lol) so now i have to go to a junk yard and find me a decent looking one. Plus i think its a good idea to get new inner and outer tie rods for it. Thankfully i have another car to drive, the si is going to sit in the garage for a while. Thanks for your input!!!

Re: Very Frustrated!!

if you change the rack, you'll need an alignment for sure... you should still check your axles, and take the rotors in to get the lateral runout checked... look at rims, both for balance and for bends, check tires for abnormal wear, it's seldom just one thing that's making your vehicle shake... check all those things, techs at sears can do it in like 45 mins... so even w/o any real knowledge, you should be able to do it in like 1.5 hrs lol

I know, that's not saying much for sears techs.. but I used to work there.. most of them spend their days in the back smoking and drinking coffee. :P

Re: Very Frustrated!!

Its not shortend, its quicker ratio, or shorter ratio. And it doenst make it more nimble, it just reduces the amount of lock to lock turn.

what he said. technically is like taking a bike with a 44t sprocket, and 16t flywheel and replacing the 44t with a 54 tooth, it will take less rotation to spin the rear wheel.

Re: Very Frustrated!!

Ok, but I ment more nimble because you can steer the steering wheel less distance, and turns the wheels more than stock. I.e, more nimble with driver input, more responsive change in direction..

have you ever driven a car with a short ratio rack and pinion? they get squirrly at high speeds, not exactly something you'd want for a daily.
