I replaced the head on my 91 Honda Civic 1.5L. The exhaust valves were baked on the #2. 3 & 4 were cooked but not as bad as 2. #1 valves looked ok. I bought the reman head online and installed it. When I started it up it ran fine. It was surging a little but other then that it all seemed OK. Then I noticed an oil leak by the crank and was dripping (fast)out of the timming belt cover. I could not see exactly where the oil was coming from but, at best guess I figured it was a crank seal. I replaced the crank seal but I still have the leak. The car leaked a little oil before the head replacement but nothing close to this. I'm thinking some how the the oil path was blocked or I'm getting pressure some how to push the oil out the seal. I just can't imagen getting that much of an oil leak from an area that has no pressure. Or, could a oil pump failure produce a leak like that. Thanks in advance.

Re: Oil Leak after replacing head 91 Honda Civic 1.5 SOHC
If you replaced the front main and it still leaks it's probably comming from a seal around the oil pump.

Autoguy:
Is the oil pump located right where the crank comes out. I was looking to replace the oil pump when did the head. How big of a job is it to replace the pump? Thanks in advance |

Yes, the oil pump is connected to the front of the crank. And no, it's not that hard to replace. At the least, have a Haynes manual on hand and you'll be fine.

Re: Oil Leak after replacing head 91 Honda Civic 1.5 SOHC
This is what I currently use...I keep it on a USB flash jump drive and refer to it on my laptop...This is nice to have...I can't find the oil pump on it though...thanks for you help
http://www.carenthusiast.com/crxuk/C...hop_Manual.pdf There is one more thing I would like to run by you to see what you think. While I was in the removing the crank bolt part, I tried to lock the cam pulley with a large phillips head driver and break the crank bolt with a breaker bar. The bolt didn't come loose but, it appeared (guessing) that the belt jumped a tooth or two on the cog pulley. I inspected the belt and found no damamge. Maybe because of the oil it helped it slip. Or was that popping noise possibly something else? Could I have done something to the oil pump by doing that. |

No, the oil pump wouldn't be damaged but your engine's timing may be off.

Re: Oil Leak after replacing head 91 Honda Civic 1.5 SOHC
I already set the timing that's not a problem..I was not sure if I might have done something else. Setting the timing is the easy part. I'll check on a oil pump and replace that while I'm at it. Thanks for the help..I hope the PDF file will of some use to you
Audioguy: Is it possible the oil control jet could be partailly block. I know I'm getting oil on top but what if it's partially blocked and oil is blowing back out the seal? Last edited by TuffGI; 09-17-2006 at 08:44 PM. |

Re: Oil Leak after replacing head 91 Honda Civic 1.5 SOHC
I found and fixed the oil leak..I over looked the fact that the reman head didn't have a cam shaft seal. I installed a seal and it took care of that problem. I'm getting a lot of blue smoke out the exhaust...could the valve seals keep leaking after the car warms up? Or am I looking at a bad seal on the head gasket. I'm also see a lot of condenstaion from exhaust also. Thanks in advance.
