96 xl popping noise

My 96 xj has started to make a popping noise when i turn the steering wheel back and fourth i looked under it and it seemed like it was coming from the steering shaft any ideas why this would be happening? doesnt seem to cause any other problems its just an annoying soumd when i turn the wheel

If you think it is the steering shaft, tighten the coupler screws first and then the steering wheel nut. If there is too much play, adjust the steering box adjuster a little bit at a time. (Make sure you disam air bag before tightening steering wheel nut.)
If it is underneath, look at the track bar, jonny joint end.

Sounds like the trackbar is loose. Tighten the ballstud end of it and it should go away. It worked for me....

make sure ball joints are ok. when they need replaceing 'they make popping sound in turns.

i first thought of that but while i was under the rig and had someone turn the wheel back and fourth it was coming from the steering linkage, how often do those go bad? its not an expensive part so i may just replace anyway i will check on the track bar
